Donation Policy

The Friends of the Val Verde County Library accepts gently used materials. Some of the materials donated are incorporated into the library’s permanent collection, while others are sold in the Friends of the Library book sale. Proceeds from the book sale help pay for library programs. Donations will be accepted during normal operating hours. If you have a large quantity of books to donate or need a receipt for your donation, please let the library staff know ahead of your arrival by calling the circulation desk at (830) 774-7595.

Basic guidelines for book donations:

  • Please do not put books for donation in the book drop. The book drop is designated for materials in the permanent collection.
  • Please pack in bags or boxes, preferably containers you do not need returned.
  • All items must be in saleable condition.

Please note that we are not able to accept:

  • Books that are moldy, mildewed, food-stained, heavily highlighted, or falling apart. Materials previously stored in attics or garages need special checking.
  • Books published by magazines (ex: Reader’s Digest Condensed and Time Life books)
  • Magazines and newspapers
  • Dated materials: travel, tax, school textbooks, educational workbooks, encyclopedias and multi-volume sets, computer software.
  • Audio cassettes or VHS tapes
  • Coloring books, puzzles, or board games.
